Very Important Points of Gravitation

Mass of a body remains same everywhere but weight of a body is different at different places due to variation of g.

Mass of body is measured by physical balance and weight of body is measured by spring balance.

At the centre of earth g = 0 and hence weight =0.

Value of g is maximum at the poles and minimum at the equator.

Escape velocity does not depend upon (i) Mass of the body (ii) The direction of projection and (iii) The shape and size of the body.

Escape velocity at the moon is very low and because of very low escape velocity, there is practically no atmosphere, since root mean square velocity of gas molecules is more than the escape velocity for the moon.

Orbital velocity and time period of a satellite do not depend upon the mass of the satellite but they depend upon the mass of the planet.

Work done by a satellite is zero.

Resultant force acting on satellite is not zero but a gravitational force acts on it due to the planet which provides necessary centripetal force.

Satellite is a freely falling body. If a satellite stops revolving then it will fall in the planet.

Weight of a body in an artificial satellite is zero because whole weight of body is used as centripetal force.

Angular momentum remains constant in planetary orbits.
